Helping those most in need couldn’t have come at a better time this year, especially around the holiday season. Muse Cosmetics, a beauty supplier and brand specializing in cruelty-free and ethically sourced products for women of color, will host a hygiene product collection drive to benefit youth served by the Detroit Phoenix Center, according to a press release.
Sheryl Espinal, founder, and president of Muse Cosmetics, headquartered in TechTown Detroit, has given back to the community since opening the beauty supply business in 2011 and has made it her mission.
“We are proud to partner with the Detroit Phoenix Center, an organization with tremendous dedication to addressing the issue of youth homelessness in our community and providing a support system to help them succeed,” said Espinal in the press release. “We understand the need is especially great for basic items to help with everyday needs of the youth the organization serves. Through the contributions of Muse Cosmetics and the generosity of our customers, I know this drive will help make a significant impact, especially during this unusual holiday season.”
Nonprofit organization Detroit Phoenix Center listens to the needs of young people who are most at risk of and/or currently experiencing homelessness through direct services, including intensive coaching, a daily drop-in center, advocacy, prevention, and emergency crisis assistance, according to the release. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, though, its drop-in center, which is a low barrier, safe space for young adults, ages 13-24, will remain closed, the release added. The majority of Detroit Phoenix Center’s services are available virtually and through mobile outreach.
Detroit Phoenix Center’s wish list includes the following hygiene and basic survival items, critical need items:
- Deodorant and body spray
- Shower products (shower gel, washcloths)
- Toothbrush/Toothpaste
- Ethnic and natural hair products
- Socks
- Feminine hygiene products
- Girls and women’s undergarments (new)
“We are grateful and thankful to have community partners like Muse Cosmetics that are willing to help youth in need,” said Courtney Smith, founder and executive director of Detroit Phoenix Center. “These donations will make a difference in the lives of youth we serve and remind them that there are people who genuinely care.”
The most-needed items will be collected from now through the end of December and can be dropped off at the following locations across metro Detroit:
- Wayne Cutz Barber & Salon, 35497 Ford Rd in Westland.
- Joe Edwards Salon, 11792 Belleville Road in Belleville.
- Shears & Shaves, 20202 Livernois in Detroit.
