During the Tuesday, November 2 General Election, voters went to the polls and shook up several Detroit City Council seats with new faces, among some familiar ones to select the top candidates in various races and the City Clerk’s office. These unofficial election results are based on 100 percent of the city’s district’s reported numbers.
Detroit City Clerk
The Michigan Chronicle endorsed Janice M. Winfrey for re-election for Detroit City Clerk. The incumbent gained a monumental victory with Winfrey receiving 64,332 votes in comparison to challenger Denzel McCampbell’s 25,829 votes.
At-Large City Council
Coleman A. Young Jr. beat out incumbent Janee Ayers by nearly 10,000 more votes with 48,357 votes.
District 1
Michigan Chronicle endorsee James Tate won with 12,028 votes over challenger Krystal Larsosa’s 4,089 votes.
District 2
Incumbent Roy McCalister Jr. lost out to newcomer Angela Whitfield Calloway who garnered 9,952 votes to his 8,020.
District 3
Incumbent Scott Benson did not face a challenger.
District 4
Latisha Johnson stayed steady with a strong lead of 6,880 votes to journalist M.L. Elrick’s 4,414 votes.
District 5
Incumbent Mary Sheffield did not face a challenger
District 6
Gabriela Santiago-Romero led with 5,921 votes over Michigan Chronicle endorsee Hector Santiago’s 2,028 votes.
District 7
Michigan Chronicle endorsee Fred Durhal led with 5,607 votes to challenger Regina Ross who received 5,548 votes.
