Detroit Police Chief James Craig Tests Positive for Coronavirus, Mayor Says

Friday, Mayor Duggan announced Detroit Police Chief James Craig tested positive for the coronavirus.  Craig is currently at home quarantined and has placed Assistant Chief James White in charge of running day to day operations for the next 2 weeks.

Chief Craig is one of 39 confirmed coronavirus cases within the Detroit Police Department.  Currently, 468 police officers are being quarantined for possible exposure.

The mayor’s office along with the DPD are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of Detroit officers including:

  • monitoring temperatures every shift
  • providing personal protection equipment
  • enforcing strict social distancing
  • reviewing possible risk/exposure of officers
  • focusing on safe return of officers to work

The mayor also announced expanded COVID-19 testing for 400 Detroit residents daily at the State Fairgrounds starting tomorrow.  They must first contact their doctor if they feel they have symptoms and the doctor will provide a physical or electronic script to bring to the testing site. The script along with a valid ID is needed to receive a test.  After testing, residents should get results within 3-4 business days.
