Detroit Barbershop & Salon Employees to Receive 15-minute COVID Testing and PPE

In preparation for barbershops and salons reopening Monday, Mayor Duggan announced employees of those businesses can receive free COVID-19 15-minute testing. Additionally, employees can receive PPE kits consisting of surgical masks, gloves, and a face shield.

“We have to keep the spread of this disease down. Nobody want to be in three or four weeks with the governor ordering the closing of hair and nail salons again…We have to make sure we do this safely,” said Duggan in his latest press conference.

Free testing for employees is available at the Detroit Health Department Friday and Saturday, 11 AM-6 PM as well as Sundays from 8 AM-4 PM. An appointment is required. Additionally those seeking testing must be an employee of a barbershop or salon within Detroit.

To schedule an appointment and pick up a PPE Kit, call 313-251-4488 between 8 AM and 8 PM.

Duggan announced testing will be made available every two weeks for employees and encouraged stylists and clients to hold each other accountable.

“I want to be one city in this area where if you go in for a hair or nail appointment, you know people servicing you can tell you exactly when they have been tested.”

The mayor even took a 15-minute test himself during the press conference, which tested negative, to show everyone the simple process.

The Michigan Chronicle previously reported Governor Whitmer’s decision to gradually reopen businesses this month at limited capacity.
