Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, posted $1 million bail Wednesday and was released from the Minnesota Correctional Facility.
According to the Hennepin County jail roster, Chauvin, 44, was released around 11:30 a.m.
Chauvin made national headlines after video was released of the ex-officer kneeling on the neck of an unarmed George Floyd for nearly eight minutes. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for his role in the May 25 arrest.
Three other former officers, Thomas Kiernan Lane, J. Alexander Kueng, and Tou Thao, have also been charged with aiding and abetting murder and manslaughter.
The former officers previously posted bail; records don’t report them as entering pleas. All are set to attend trial next year.
Described as brutal and unjust, Floyd’s death has incited anger amongst many who have watched members of the Black community die at the hands of the police. Protests have been led by civil rights activists and others calling for change.
Video circulation was released of Floyd, 46, expressing difficulty breathing prior to his death. His cries were ignored.
As conditions of his bail, Chauvin must remain in the state of Minnesota, have zero contact with the Floyd family, and must surrender any firearms, permits, or licenses.
Chauvin’s case is expected to go to trial on March 8, 2021.
