Detroit’s North End has been a beacon of resilience and transformation, thanks in large part to the dedicated efforts of Vanguard Community Development Corporation. In honor of its 30th anniversary, Vanguard will host a gala on September 7, 2024, at The Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center, celebrating three decades of fostering positive change in the community.
As part of the festivities, Vanguard will recognize several individuals and organizations who have made substantial contributions to the Detroit community. Among the honorees, Cummins Inc. will receive the prestigious Corporate Citizenship Award for its significant work in community development and support through Cummins Advocating for Racial Equity (CARE). This initiative has been instrumental in fostering meaningful change in communities across Detroit.
Cummins, a global leader in power and technology solutions, has shown its commitment to Detroit’s future through strategic investments and partnerships that address racial inequities. Vanguard Detroit’s decision to honor Cummins reflects the corporation’s deep engagement with local communities, particularly its support in providing affordable housing, education, and social equity initiatives, which mirror Vanguard’s core mission.
In a statement ahead of the gala, Vanguard’s President and CEO, Pamela Martin Turner, expressed excitement about the upcoming celebration: “Our commitment to empowering individuals and building strong, resilient communities remains unwavering. This anniversary is a testament to the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and partners who have been instrumental in driving positive change.”
Since its founding in 1994, Vanguard has played a key role in transforming Detroit’s North End, building over 236 housing units and promoting education, healthcare, economic development, and social justice advocacy initiatives. The upcoming gala will provide a platform to reflect on these accomplishments and recognize the collective effort of all those involved, including Cummins, who has worked to sustain Detroit’s vibrancy and growth.
Other honorees at the gala will include notable Detroit figures such as Bishop Edgar L. Vann II, who will receive the Vanguard Founders Award, and Malik Yakini, who will be awarded the Vanguard Lifetime Achievement Award for Social Equity. The celebration promises to honor these outstanding individuals and organizations and inspire continued efforts in community development and equity for the future.
As Cummins Inc. receives the Corporate Citizenship Award, its work is a powerful example of how corporations can play a vital role in fostering sustainable, community-centered growth. Cummins’ ongoing involvement with Detroit highlights the importance of corporate responsibility in building strong and equitable neighborhoods, a mission that aligns with Vanguard’s vision for the future of the North End.
The community is invited to attend the gala and participate in this monumental celebration. More information can be found at www.vanguarddetroit30th.com
