The City of Detroit’s Civil Rights, Inclusion & Opportunity Department (CRIO) opened its Annual Juneteenth Student Poetry Contest on April 4.
CRIO invites all high school students across the city of Detroit to participate in sharing their creative thoughts about what Juneteenth means to them.
Prizes include: $250 for the first-place winner; $150 for the second-place winner; and $100 for the third-place winner. Winners will be also be invited to recite their winning poem on the Main Stage during the Juneteenth Freedom Fest Weekend in Eastern Market, Sunday, June 18.
The poetry prompts, or topic intended to spark writing, according to CRIO, are: “What does your Blackness means to you?”, Detroit’s Black History, and Black current and/or historical figures. The poem entries are limited a maximum of 500 words.
This year’s Freedom Fest takes place on Sunday, June 18, at Eastern Market’s Shed 5. The event is part of Juneteenth Freedom Weekend, which will be from June 16-18. Some of other events happening that weekend are Beats & BBQ Block Party at Batch Brewing Company on June 16 and the Juneteenth Jubilee Stroll on Livernois Avenue of Fashion. Detroit started celebrating Juneteenth in 2019.
