College: College For Creative Studies
What excites you most about going to college?
Preparing for my career, what I want to be, and studying with others. I look forward to hanging with people I can get inspired from who are like-minded.
What does BLM mean to you as a new Black college student?
When I step into this new Real World, it will be challenging, and I’m not surprised if I experience racism. The BLM movement is very important to me, reminding me and others that I matter, and it helped me to prepare to overcome.
What is your advice for current High School students?
I always say “Work hard. Never give up, and life will be easy.” Nobody is going to do the work for you. Push through.
Personal Statement
My name is Cortrez Brown, I’m 18 years old and I am a graduate of 2020. I’ve been drawing as long as I can remember. Growing up I was the quiet type of kid who loved watching cartoons and was fascinated by them. I started drawing at a young age and as years go on my skills would improve. In elementary school and middle school I made a good amount of comics but it wasn’t enough. I was so interested in cartoons and animation I would also make flip books every once in a while. In high school things were a lot different. I got into graphic design and in my junior year I got the opportunity to compete in Skills USA. A couple of my friends and I made an animation on bullying and got 1st place. I also received an internship with Detroit Entertainers & Musician News which I made advertisements for businesses which was kind of a challenge since I never professionally made ads before but I got through it and was such a good experience. So the college I decided to attend is College for Creative Studies. I will be majoring in Illustration and what I plan to do after college is I want to get a job in animation. I believe with the power of animation and storytelling not only are you entertaining yourself and the people around you, you’re entertaining the world.

“Work hard, never give up and life is easy” which that typically means that if you want something really bad you have to work for it because no one is gonna get it done but you. You can’t give up either because how bad do you want what you’re trying to get and if you keep at it and never give up things are gonna get a lot easier.
