Packing an overnight bag convinces your brain you are going somewhere, even when “somewhere” is only a few miles from home. No airport. No road trip. No debating whether the shoes you really want to bring are worth giving up precious suitcase space. Just enough clothes for one night, a good dinner outfit, your girls, and permission to temporarily behave as if the responsibilities waiting at home don’t know where you are.
For this edition of Chic-cation, we stayed close to home with an overnight escape at MotorCity Casino Hotel. And maybe that is exactly what made it work.
I love a destination trip. Give me a new city, a good itinerary, and somewhere I have never eaten before, and I am ready. But discovering your own city as a guest has its own kind of pleasure. You don’t always have to leave Detroit to get away, and sometimes staying close to home is what makes it possible to get the girls together in the first place.
MotorCity is in the middle of its own transformation. The hotel recently debuted the first phase of newly renovated guestrooms as part of ELEVATE THE ESCAPE, a $65 million, multi-year investment in the property. The redesigned Executive King and Executive Two Queen rooms, along with the Executive Suite, have been reconfigured into what the hotel calls “mini suites,” with separate areas designed for relaxing, working, and settling in.
That made it a natural backdrop for a Chic-cation: Staycation Edition. The first thing I noticed when we entered the room was that it did not feel like a space meant only for sleeping between activities. There was room actually to be there, and when you are traveling with your girls, that matters.

Anybody who has ever taken a girls’ trip knows the hotel room becomes its own destination. It is where everybody drops their bags and immediately starts talking. Makeup gets spread across every available surface. Somebody needs to borrow something she absolutely packed but suddenly cannot find. Getting dressed for dinner becomes part beauty routine, part group therapy and part comedy show.
MotorCity’s redesign leans into that flexibility, with banquette seating, work surfaces, integrated technology, updated lighting, and Detroit skyline views. The warmer wood tones, natural textures, and residential-inspired design give the room a softer feel than you might expect from a hotel sitting above a casino’s energy.
But a Chic-cation cannot survive on a pretty hotel room alone, so once we were checked in and dressed, it was time to go downstairs.

The Wagner gave us the first real transition from regular life into girls’-night mode. Cocktails have a way of officially starting an evening. One minute everybody is still mentally carrying whatever happened earlier that day; the next, the drinks arrive, somebody raises a glass, and the conversation gets louder. Suddenly nobody is checking the clock quite as much.
From there, dinner at Revel Steak became the evening’s centerpiece. A steakhouse table almost demands that you slow down. Courses arrive. Drinks get refreshed. Plates are shared. Conversations wander. Nobody rushes through the experience, and that pace becomes part of what makes the night feel celebratory.

That may be my favorite thing about Chic-cation experiences in general. Yes, I pay attention to the hotel, the food, the cocktails, and whether the experience is actually worth recommending. But somewhere along the way, the itinerary becomes background, and the people become the story.
That feels especially true with girlfriends.
As women move deeper into adulthood, friendship can easily get squeezed into whatever space remains after careers, businesses, families, relationships, and all the other responsibilities that demand our attention. We say we need to get together. We send the group text. We promise to pick a date. Then somehow three months pass.
An overnight staycation creates a boundary around the time in a way dinner alone sometimes cannot. Nobody has to figure out when to leave because home is upstairs. Nobody has an hour-long drive waiting for them. No one else is supposed to be anywhere else for the rest of the night. For once, you do not have to squeeze friendship between everything else. You stay.

The next morning brought a completely different energy. We traded dinner and cocktails for D.Tour Spa, where facials turned the second half of the Chic-cation into the weekend’s reset. MotorCity describes D.Tour as its award-winning on-site spa, one of several amenities that allow guests to build an entire experience without leaving the property.
After a night out, ending the getaway with skincare, quiet, and the collective understanding that nobody needed to look glamorous for the next hour felt exactly right. The night before had been cocktails, dinner, getting dressed, and being out. The next morning was about slowing down, taking care of ourselves and easing back toward real life. Same hotel, completely different energy, and that contrast is what made the staycation feel complete.
It also reminded me that we sometimes make “getting away” more complicated than it needs to be. We tend to associate a real getaway with vacation days, plane tickets, road trips, and months of planning. Sometimes it absolutely is all of those things, and those trips are worth taking. But sometimes you need 24 hours.
You need a hotel room you don’t have to clean, dinner you don’t have to cook, a cocktail with your girls, and a facial the next morning. You need a chance to wake up somewhere different, while still close enough to home that getting there never becomes another source of stress. Most of all, sometimes you need uninterrupted time with people you keep promising yourself you will make more time for.
Detroit has spent years becoming a city people travel to experience. Those of us who live here sometimes need the reminder that we are allowed to experience it that way, too. We can make reservations, book the room, dress for dinner, and enjoy the city without needing a plane ticket to justify calling it a getaway.
That may be the real beauty of the staycation. You do not have to go far enough to forget where you live. Sometimes you have to step outside of your routine long enough to reconnect with your city, your girls, and maybe even a little bit of yourself.
