Where Have All The Leaders Gone? New Poll Suggests Black America No Longer Looking For Heroes

If a new poll commissioned by BET founder and business magnate Robert Johnson is any indication, the myth of a monolithic Black America has been shattered and one-size-fits-all Black leadership has gone the way of the cowboy — just replace rodeos with rallies. The Zogby Analytics poll, aptly titled, “Black Opinions in the Age of Obama,”[1] compiled responses on a wide-range of issues – from education to unemployment — that illuminated either a startling level of cognitive dissonance or a stirring level of faith, depending on whether one prefers their glasses half empty or half full. When asked why they believed the Black unemployment rate was double that of Whites, responses include: Failure of the education system for minorities/African Americans (50%) Interestingly enough, the respondents don’t seem to connect the failure of the public education system with a push towards privatization favored by President Barack Obama and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan that tokenizes Black ...

ESPN To Give Robin Roberts ‘Espy’ Award For Courage

NEW YORK — ESPN is staying in the family in giving its Arthur Ashe Courage Award to Robin Roberts at its annual ESPY awards this summer. The “Good Morning America” anchor is being saluted for how she kept viewers involved in her treatments for two serious illnesses. She had breast cancer in 2007 and last year had to undergo a bone marrow transplant to treat a rare blood disorder. Roberts returned to “Good Morning America” last month. Roberts came to sister company ABC from ESPN, where she was the network’s first black female sportscaster. Most past awards recipients have sports connections, like former Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt last year. But the ESPYs have also honored Nelson Mandela and the four men who tried to stop one of the Sept. 11 hijackings. ...

Katrina Elkins, 36, (pictured), the teen’s aunt, and Karimah Elkins, 33, his mother, gave police information that helped lead investigators to a small pond where they found a handgun, Glynn County police Chief Matt Doering told the Associated Press. De’Marquise’s aunt said publicly that her nephew was at home eating breakfast during the time of the shooting and could not have killed the baby, according to the Journal-Constitution. Police would not elaborate on what exactly either Katrina or Karimah allegedly lied about. ...
