Oprah Winfrey is set to host an unprecedented “UNITE FOR AMERICA” livestream event in support of democratic presidential nominee and current Vice President Kamala Harris. According to the vice president’s communication team, the 8 p.m. virtual event on Thursday, Sept. 19, will be broadcast virtually around the nation and to an intimate in-person audience at an undisclosed location in Metro Detroit.
“There will be a small, in-person event,” a spokesperson for the Harris campaign said, a stark contrast from the 15,000-person rally Harris held at an airport hangar at Detroit Metro Airport the week she announced Walz as her running mate.
The livestream will bring together more than 140 grassroot groups from around the country to invigorate the Harris-Walz base in the aftermath of Harris’ debate against her top presidential opponent in former President Donald Trump.
“What is essential to me is getting people motivated to vote – and that’s my intention in hosting this event,” Winfrey said in a statement. “My goal is to get people excited about the privilege and power of the vote.”
The virtual event will feature a diverse range of groups, including Win With Black Men, Win With Black Women, White Dudes for Harris, and Swifties for Kamala. Khalil Thompson of Win With Black Men highlighted that this diversity adds strength to the movement, with representation from various groups like Oprah Winfrey.
“To witness such an organic groundswell of support for a vision of the future rooted in equality, progress, and joy with a future that is soon to be led, for the first time, by a Black woman… that’s life-changing,” Thompson said.
Alongside the millions of anticipated virtual participants across YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Twitch platforms, Winfrey’s and Harris’ camps will extend invitations to some 400 local voters to attend the discussion in person. This event aims to ignite a call to action, urging communities in battleground states to rally behind voter registration efforts and garner support ahead of the Nov. 5 deadline.
Harris has made Michigan – and specifically Detroit – a frequent campaign stop in 2024, with this being her sixth time campaigning in this crucial battleground state this year. Her first few stops happened while she was campaigning for current President Joe Biden, but that changed when she was nominated by Biden in July for the party’s pick after he announced that he would not seek re-election.
Most recently, Harris was in Detroit on Labor Day vowing to protect workers’ rights at a rally. If elected, she vowed to pass the PRO Act to give workers more power to organize, and she said all Americans have unions to thank for quality-of-life assurances that unions and union members fought to bring to working people.
“Everywhere I go I tell people, ‘Look, you may not be a union member. You better thank a union member,” Harris said during her speech. “For the five-day workweek, you better thank a union member. For sick leave, you better thank a union. For paid leave. You better thank a union for vacation time.”
