The 2023 Met Gala was in full swing Monday evening (May 1), honoring the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and showcasing some jaw-dropping looks. Twitter was eating up most of the fashions, especially the ones donned by notable Black stars and celebrities. Not all the glamorous outfits got praise however with some users openly voicing their disappointment. With all that said, here were Black Twitter’s reactions to the most fashionable night of the year.

Michaela Coel

Viewers and online users were practically screaming about Met Gala co-chair Michaela Coel‘s dazzling dress. The I May Destroy You star walked the red carpet in a Schiaparelli couture dress decked out with over 130,000 crystals as she revealed in an interview with co-host LaLa Anthony. She also said the dress took over 3,800 hours of labor to create.

Variety captured shots of the gorgeous details on Coel’s dress. One user described her outfit as a “galaxy in a dress,” while another user complimented her iconic cheekbones.

Naomi Campbell

Many Twitter users expressed their disappointment with supermodel Naomi Campbell‘s pretty pink dress. As pointed out by one user, it’s inspired by the Chanel S/S 10-style dress designed by Lagerfeld in Spring 2010. But that wasn’t enough to quell some viewers’ displeasure with one person even saying she’s “disrespecting” Lagerfeld by wearing pink, a color he famously said people shouldn’t wear.

Some people simply remarked that it was “tame” or underwhelming compared to everyone else, while others said she “could’ve done better” with her choice of dress. Regardless, she still got plenty of love from fans and onlookers.

Brian Tyree Henry

Brian Tyree Henry went out of the box for his show-stopping outfit this evening. The Atlanta star showed up to the event in a tuxedo-esque outfit draped in a black, frilly cape and rocking long black and white necklaces. Thousands of Twitter users believe he was the best dressed of the night, and many even shaded how other men attend the Met Gala.

“The other men dressed up as waiters should take notes,” one user said.

Another remarked, “THAT is how you dress as a male to the met.”

“He’s literally running the men’s category so hard,” a Twitter commentator wrote. “Zero competition whatsoever.”
