A monumental moment is unfolding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as Alabama A&M University’s esteemed Marching Maroon and White (MMW) band prepares to take the lead at the 97th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. This significant achievement showcases the talent and dedication of the 256-strong ensemble from the university, one of the 107 HBCUs in the United States.
The journey of the students and their Director of University Bands, Carlton Wright, spans over 900 miles by bus to reach the iconic parade. This opportunity arises two years after Wright, an alumnus of Alabama A&M and Hampton University, was inspired by witnessing marching bands from the University of Alabama and Hampton University at the same event. His vision to showcase his students on this prestigious platform has now come to fruition.
Adding to the spectacle, the university’s Dancin’ Divas, an auxiliary unit of the marching band, will feature in a special performance alongside the renowned Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. This collaboration further emphasizes the dynamic intricacies and historical significance of an HBCU making its mark at such a high-profile event.

The route will see participants moving down Central Park West to Columbus Circle, turning onto Central Park South, then marching down 6th Avenue, and finally making a westward turn at 34th Street to end at 7th Avenue in front of Macy’s iconic Herald Square flagship store.
The event, to be broadcast live on NBC, will also be available for streaming on Peacock. Notable television hosts Hoda Kotb, Savannah Guthrie, and Al Roker from the ‘Today’ show will provide commentary, adding to the excitement of this year’s procession.
