It’s time to come back and get reacquainted with the Motherland via Detroit.
Organizers at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History announced at a press conference at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 6, a “Return to the Wright” for Detroit’s largest ethnic festival, the 38th Annual African World Festival.
This year’s event will take place from Friday, August 20 through Sunday, August 22 on the grounds of The Wright Museum, located at 315 E. Warren Ave.
This regional celebration of African culture is presented by Ford Motor Company Fund and attracts more than 100,000 visitors over the three-day weekend. Additional sponsors include Bedrock, The Detroit Pistons, Pepsi, AAA, Wayne State University, and a host of others. This exciting and free event takes place each day from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. and features an African marketplace with more than 150 vendors of Afro-centric souvenirs, visual arts, handcrafts, apparel, food, and a lot more! This year’s musical lineup will feature Sunshine Anderson on Friday, Grammy Award winner Angelique Kidjo on Saturday, and Tim Bowman, Jr. on Sunday!
Joining Neil Barclay, President and CEO of the Charles H. Wright Museum for this announcement is Pamela Alexander, Director of Community Development for FORD Motor Company Fund, Detroit City Councilwoman Pro Tem Mary Sheffield, Rochelle Riley, Director, Office of Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurship for the City of Detroit and Tatiana Grant, Principal and this year’s AWF Event Planner with 2050 Partners Inc.
Celebrating the African diaspora, visitors will experience a Rock the Runway Fashion Show, African drummers and dancers, along with a youth/family area, entitled Watoto Village, complete with storytellers and a book giveaway. Festival stages and activity areas also include portions of the Museum’s interior spaces.
Museum exhibitions, including Enshrined: Presence + Preservation by Mario Moore, The Tuskegee Airmen National Museum, and our permanent exhibit And Still We Rise, are all free with Museum membership.
Timed admissions must be made on thewright.org website for all visitors and hours will be extended during the festival.
