The controversial lawsuit and subsequent verdict in the copyright infringement case of the song “Blurred Lines” has raised questions within the music and legal industries. It will be topic of discussion by music and copyright experts who will present a review of the judicial ruling and the impact of that ruling on the creation and performance of music.  “This case in particular has the music industry discussing the legal protections granted to original works and what effect, if any,  this decision will have on  the ability to create music in the future,” said Richard Herman,  of Richard A. Herman P.C. and program chair. “We will explore this ruling, what it means for artists and creators and how to protect themselves and their works.”

On Friday, May 20, 2016 the featured guests leading the discussion are Judith Finell, president of New York-based music consulting firm Finell Music Services, Inc. who was the testifying musicologist for the Marvin Gaye estate in the case; and Tom Leavens, partner in Chicago-based Leavens, Strand & Glover, LLC and adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law and at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah who will offer his expertise and legal perspective relating to performing, visual, and literary expression, and intellectual property.
