After a wildly successful opening weekend, The Batman actress Zoë Kravitz is opening up about the reason she was denied playing in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises.
According to Variety, Kravitz was told she was “too urban” for an unspecified role in Christopher Nolan‘s second installment of the Dark Knight franchise. The 33-year-old wouldn’t say if the role she was denied was specifically “Catwoman,” who ended up being played by Anne Hathaway.
“I don’t know if it came directly from Chris Nolan,” Kravitz told the outlet. “I think it was probably a casting director of some kind, or a casting director’s assistant … Being a woman of color and being an actor and being told at the time that I wasn’t able to read because of the color of my skin, and the word urban being thrown around like that, that was what really hard about that moment.”
In 2015, Kravitz told Nylon that she was seeking a small one in Dark Knight Rises, because the film wasn’t “going urban” for the part. “It was like, ‘What does that have to do with anything?’ I have to play the role like, ‘Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on with you?'”
