Zeta Phi Beta and Phi Beta Sigma Host Free Expungement Fair to Help Detroiters Reclaim Their Futures

In Detroit, the path to rebuilding one’s life after a criminal conviction can be a difficult and often discouraging journey. While serving time may be behind an individual, the social, economic, and legal hurdles that follow can seem insurmountable. A criminal record often acts as a barrier to stable employment, affordable housing, and overall community acceptance.

Recognizing the importance of accessible resources to help individuals clear their past and build a better future, the Redford Graduate Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the Ann Arbor Graduate Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity are joining forces for their 7th Annual Expungement Fair. This free event, set for Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Focus: HOPE in Detroit, is designed to assist individuals in sealing or erasing eligible criminal records with the help of legal experts.

This year’s expungement fair is a critical initiative aimed at providing a fresh start for individuals facing significant barriers due to their past convictions. In partnership with the Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc., attendees will have access to no-cost legal aid services, making it easier for them to move forward without the weight of their past holding them back.

“We are honored to host this vital event again,” says Phina Ross, president of Zeta Phi Beta’s Upsilon Theta Zeta Chapter. “Free expungement services give people a fresh start and open doors to new chances.”

Over the years, the “Get Engaged” program, spearheaded by Zeta Phi Beta, has served over 100,000 people across the United States. Last year alone, volunteers helped 115 clients at the fair, and this year, they hope to assist even more Detroit residents in reclaiming their futures.

This collaborative effort also aligns with both organizations’ commitment to S.H.E. — Social Action, Health Action, and Economic Action. The program not only addresses the legal aspect of expungement but also strengthens the community by providing opportunities for personal growth and economic stability. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity are dedicated to breaking down barriers and advocating for fair access to housing, employment, and other vital resources.

“We truly believe in the power of a second chance,” Ross continues. “When you remove the stigma of a criminal record, you give individuals the tools to succeed in life and contribute positively to society.”
