Young African Leaders from Mandela Washington Fellowship Visit Detroit for International Exchange and Volunteer Efforts

In Detroit, the crucial components of connection, creativity and camaraderie have played a significant role in generating opportunities that extend far beyond the city’s borders. Thanks to various programs and progressive initiatives, incredible leaders, researchers and students have had the opportunity to use the city as a space for understanding, learning and creative collaboration.

Since late June, a partnership between the Mandela Washington Fellowship and Wayne State University’s exchange program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, has been in full effect. This collaboration has provided African exchange students with valuable opportunities including networking, mentoring and active involvement in the local community. Through these joint efforts, the students have been able to enrich their experiences and make meaningful contributions during their time in the United States.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders stands as the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). This prestigious Fellowship extends an invitation to young leaders from across Sub-Saharan Africa to partake in academic coursework and leadership training here in the United States.

Wayne State University’s Office of International Programs played a significant role in facilitating the exchange and academic components of the Mandela Washington Fellowship. As a prestigious educational institution, Wayne State provided a platform for the fellows to engage with academic resources, attend workshops and collaborate with professors and students on research projects.

As part of the engagement efforts, 25 exchange students had a unique opportunity to volunteer with Developing K.I.D.S (Kingdom’s in Different Stages), a program facilitated by Global Ties Detroit, focusing on youth development. On their volunteer day, the students actively engaged with the youth, gaining valuable insights into the organization’s mission and its previous impactful work. This hands-on experience allowed the students to connect with the community and better understand the organization’s efforts to empower and support the young generation.

During their visit, the Fellows generously volunteered with Developing K.I.D.S., an organization that focuses on empowering young people to achieve their potential through mentorship, educational support and community outreach. The fellows had the opportunity to connect with local youth and share their diverse perspectives and experiences.

Through their involvement with Developing K.I.D.S., the young African leaders gained insights into the challenges faced by Detroit’s youth and the remarkable efforts being made to uplift and empower them. Additionally, the collaboration allowed the fellows to develop meaningful relationships with the community and create lasting connections.

Global Ties Detroit plays a pivotal role in bridging cultural gaps and facilitating international connections. As part of its mission, exchange programs are developed to host international visitors and promote mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries. By welcoming the Mandela Washington Fellows to Detroit, Global Ties fosters a space for dialogue, collaboration and learning.

The arrival of African exchange students in Detroit brings a rich spread of diverse cultural backgrounds, traditions and perspectives. Their presence plays a pivotal role in fostering a vibrant environment of cultural exchange and understanding, promoting an inclusive and tolerant society within the city. Engaging with students from various African countries offers local residents an invaluable opportunity to delve into the unique customs, languages and heritage of Africa, effectively breaking down stereotypes and nurturing mutual respect among all communities.

Wayne State University is one of the nine institutes selected to host students in the Leadership in Public Management sector. The other institutions participating in this program are Michigan State University, Kansas State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, University of Delaware, University of Georgia, University of Maryland, Drexel University, Appalachian State University and The Presidential Precinct.

The Leadership in Public Management Institutes cater to current or aspiring professionals from various sectors, including all levels of government, regional or international organizations, as well as other public-focused groups and think tanks. The primary objective of these institutes is to equip Fellows with essential technical and leadership skills by exposing them to U.S. models and best practices in public management.

Throughout the program, Fellows undergo intensive training in key areas such as citizen engagement, resource management, financial management systems and the intricate interplay between government, business and civil society. By delving into these subjects, participants gain valuable insights and tools to become effective leaders in their respective fields.
