Jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, Pulitzer Prize honoree and nine-time Grammy Award winner, has dug deep into his collection of spiritually inspired recordings for a special 15-track collection titled “The Spiritual Side of Wynton Marsalis.”
The collection is on the Columbia/Sony Classical/Legacy label.
The release of “The Spiritual Side of Wynton Marsalis” coincides with Marsalis’ month-long “Abyssinian: A Gospel Celebration Tour” featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the 70-voice Chorale Le Chateau.
As difficult as it is to believe, the 16-city tour features more than 85 people on four buses plus an equipment truck.
“Spiritual means the innermost reflections on the Most High and on an all-pervasive consciousness,” said Marsalis. “It is a basic warmth and acceptance of human beings.”
The tracks that Marsalis personally selected range from duets, trios and small combos to full orchestra settings. They were chosen from seven albums that were originally released on the Columbia and Sony Classical labels.
Those albums are “Uptown Ruler – Soul Gesture,” “In This House, On This Morning,” “Blood on the Fields,” “Sweet Release & Ghost Story,” “Reeltime,” “Live at the Village Vanguard” and “All Rise.”
Wynton Marsalis is managing director and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
