A woman has been arrested after she was allegedly caught attempting to pour gasoline on the birth home of Martin Luther King Jr. in Atlanta.

On Thursday (December 7), Atlanta police responded to a report of vandalism at King’s home, per USA Today.

A 26-year-old woman was initially spotted pouring gasoline on the home by two tourists from Utah, who interrupted her. Off-duty NYPD officers detained the woman before local police arrived.

The woman was arrested on charges of second-degree criminal attempt arson and interference with government property. An investigation into the incident is still ongoing. The suspect is said to be a veteran.

Following the incident, the King Center released a statement on social media saying the attempt to burn down the civil rights icon’s home was unsuccessful because of the “brave intervention of good Samaritans and the quick response of law enforcement.”

“Our prayers are with the individual who allegedly committed this criminal act,” the King Center added.
