In December 2022, LaShawn English made history as the first woman and woman of color elected Director of UAW Region 1. Over 24 years, she has served the union in crucial administrative, bargaining, and community roles.
English’s union career began with United Association Building Trades Local 370, where she earned journeyman credentials as a steam fitter and licensed plumber. After joining Stellantis Sterling Stamping Plant as a pipefitter, she became active in UAW Local 1264, eventually serving three terms as its first woman of color President.
Her leadership expanded through positions including skilled trades delegate for over a decade, National Skilled Trades Council member, and National Negotiator for Stellantis (2015-2019). She also held roles on various local and regional committees.
English earned her bachelor’s in business administration from Baker College in 2014. As a mother, she champions policies supporting working families. She currently serves on boards including APRI, CBTU, and Michigan Democratic Party, while maintaining lifelong NAACP membership, remaining a fierce advocate for union members.
