Embekka Roberson

Dr. Embekka Roberson became Superintendent of Birmingham Public Schools in 2021, becoming the first person of color and first woman to lead the district she has served for nearly two decades. Beginning as a fourth-grade teacher in Detroit Public Schools, she has established a career distinguished by meaningful leadership and service in communities throughout Wayne and Oakland counties. Her breadth of experience across elementary, middle, high school, and higher education give her a uniquely comprehensive understanding of student learning, grounded in a deep commitment to educational equity, student well-being, and ensuring every student feels seen, valued, and supported.

Dr. Roberson leads with purpose, recognizing the power of representation in executive leadership and public education. She holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Wayne State University and serves as an adjunct professor, preparing future leaders to strengthen systems and improve outcomes for all students.
