Williams-Bayer Industries to expand presence in Westland

wbiWilliams-Bayer Industries, a tier 2 automotive supplier, with a plant already located in Westland is requesting a tax abatement from Westland’s city council.

Williams-Bayer Industries, Inc. has been in business for more than 15 years and currently has 80 employees.

The company was considering a number of surrounding communities to locate their second plant but decided to utilize a vacant lot adjacent to its current location.

“We chose Westland to expand our business because we are able to share resources with our existing facility and Mayor Wild and his Economic Development team have been very business friendly, highly competitive and have a history of expediting building permits,” said Wilbert Williams, president of Williams-Bayer Industries.

In 2012, Williams was a semifinalist for the Michigan and Northwest Ohio Ernest & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Williams-Bayer produce CNC bent tubing, catalytic converter shells, metal stampings, component assemblies, suspension bushings and stamped, staked and welded assemblies for the Big 3 as well as Japanese plants.

The company is an OEM supplier.

Total investment for this project is approximately $8.1 million which includes $3.6 million for land and building and $4.5 million for machinery and equipment.

The investment will generate approximately $49,000 in new tax revenue for the City of Westland if a 12-year abatement is granted. It also will result in 55 new jobs.

“The turnaround of Westland has gotten a lot of attention.  We are in the financial position now where we can compete on a larger scale for jobs and investment,” said Mayor William R. Wild. “Westland has a large trained workforce and is becoming a destination for investment across all sectors.”
