Why Do Black Detroiters Face Higher Economic Inequalities?

The State of Economic Equity in Detroit report from Detroit Future City connected with 500 community stakeholders which included Detroit residents, children, nonprofits and other entities in the primarily Black city.

Per the report, the median income ballooned to 60% for white Detroiters in comparison to only 8% for Black Detroiters. Also, the unemployment rate for Black people is 1.5 times higher than their white counterparts.

“The future of Detroit must benefit all Detroiters and unleash the economic promise and well-being of its residents. However, the current reality is that, in spite of a decade of growth, substantial economic inequities persist in Detroit,” the report’s executive summary.
