What the Red Wings Really Need

Detroit, MI- Hockey season is back and the Red Wings will try once again to compete for another Stanley Cup Title. The Wings have not won a Stanley Cup since 2008 and have not been a serious contender over the last few years. Despite Detroit being known as “HockeyTown”, the Red Wings have either be put out of the playoffs in the first or second round each of the last three seasons. With stars like Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, offensively they look challenged and their goaltending has been mediocre at best. Not to mention, players like Johan Franzen and Dan Cleary have been a waste of space on the roster and have not provided much stability at their respective positions.
What the Red Wings are in need of is a complete overhaul of the roster and build around their young group players like Gustav Nyquist and Danny DeKeyser. The roster is loaded with players that are passed their prime and are longer the game-changers that they once were in the past. The obvious change that needs to be made is changing their goalkeeper as Jimmy Howard has been too inconsistent and allows one too many goals. His inability to stop shots right in front of him has Wings leaving the game in anger. However, it is not entirely his fault as to why he allows so many goals. The defense up front has been average at best and cannot push the puck and generate enough offense for the forwards up front.
Their season will not be a total failure however, as they will qualify for their 24th consecutive playoff berth. Wings fans will still support and sell out most games this season but again I would not be surprised if their patience with the team’s lack success lately finally boils over.
