MACKINAC ISLAND — ‘High Expectations, High Returns: Investing in Minority Entrepreneurs’ was one of the several panel sessions featured during last week’s Mackinac Policy Conference. Hiram Jackson, Publisher of Michigan Chronicle, CEO of Real Times Media, was one of the guest panelists.
“If you can’t develop a sense of urgency around Black entrepreneurship in Detroit then, where can you do it?,” said Jackson, as he highlighted the need for a larger focus on investment in Black business in a majority Black Detroit. “If our greatest asset is human capital, wouldn’t it make sense from a business perspective, to invest in the largest asset class in Detroit? – African American residents”.

The conversation touched on the range of disparities for minority Black businesses, wealth gap, investment equity, and capital resources. The discussion also featured Candice Matthews Brackeen, General Partner of Lightship Capital and Brian Calley, President of Small Business Association of Michigan. The panel session was sponsored by Delta Dental and moderated by Vickie Thomas, Communications Director, City of Detroit.
