What Does Gov. Whitmer’s “Stay At Home” Order Mean?

Today, Gov. Whitmer announced her “Stay At Home” executive order. Many people are wondering what the order entails and what makes it different than the preceding state-mandated orders.

What does this order mean for Detroiters:

Can I go outside?

Yes. But with considerable limitations. Although residents may only leave their homes for limited circumstances including medical care, medical supplies including prescriptions, groceries, personal care items, gas, and take-out food. Under the order, you also can leave your house to engage in outdoor activities like walking, running or cycling and to care for a family member or a family member’s pet in another household. Additionally, you can leave your house to attend legal proceedings or hearings for essential or emergency purposes
and to volunteer for businesses or operations that provide food, shelter and other necessities of life for economically disadvantaged or for people with disabilities. Individuals should continue to practice social distancing of six feet away from others during activities while interacting with the public Note: All public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring among persons not part of a single household are prohibited.

Can I go to work?

Maybe. All businesses are currently prohibited from in-person work with the exception of the following critical infrastructure workers:

  • Health care and public health
  • Law enforcement, public safety, and first responders
  • Food and agriculture
  • Energy
  • Water and wastewater
  • Transportation and logistics
  • Public works
  • Communications and information technology, including news media
  • Other community-based government operations and essential functions
  • Critical manufacturing
  • Hazardous materials
  • Financial services
  • Chemical supply chains and safety
  • Defense industrial base

Can I still go to the grocery stores for groceries and personal supplies?

Yes. As stated above, grocery stores, take-out restaurants, gas stations, and pharmacies will still be open and operational.
