Wayne County Wants to Keep Property Owners in Their Homes

DETROIT — The Wayne County Treasurer’s office is pushing an effort to help Wanye County residents stay in their homes. Homeowners are urged to engage the county’s treasurer’s office to seek assistance that will help them avoid foreclosure ahead of a looming deadline.

Property owners have until March 31st to apply for the Property Tax Foreclosure Prevention program. Wayne County residents who are behind in their taxes from year 2020 and prior must arrange a payment agreement or pay the overdue accounts in full by the end of the month.

For people of owner-occupied homes behind in their taxes, owners can apply for the Michigan Homeowner Assistance Fund by the deadline date and avoid property foreclosure. The County Treasures urging the public that there is assistance available for residents who seek it.

“The Wayne County Treasurer’s Office has helped over 3,400 people through this program,” said Eric Sabree, Wayne County Treasurer. “If people don’t apply, they could lose their home to tax foreclose and that’s something we don’t want to see happen. It displaces people because people leave, house are sold, they’re evicted, and then a lot of people end up homeless. It’s much more expensive for a person to lose their property than it is for us to work with them.”

The County Treasurer foreclosure program is thanks to funding from the State of Michigan backed by federal dollars as a result of COVID relief assistance. $12 million has already been spent to assist homeowners who may be eligible for up to $25,000 in grant funding per household. The grant could be used to pay delinquent taxes, past due mortgage payments, utility bills, internet services, and homeowner insurance.
