The Josie Odum Morris Literacy Project (JOMLP) hosts the Third Annual State of Literacy Forum Saturday, March 20 at 4 p.m. in the Booker T. Dozier Recreation Complex, 2025 Middlebelt Rd. in Inkster.
The forum will include a panel discussion featuring radio personality O’Neil Stevens; Minister Nathaniel Bishop of Middlebelt Baptist Church; Dr. Paula Daniels, chief academic officer for Inkster Public Schools; Dr. Glenda D. Price, president emeritus of Marygrove College and Doris Motom-Spruill of the Inkster Chamber of Commerce. Refreshments will be provided, and the Inkster High School Choir will perform.
Robin Morris, Inkster-based author and founder of JOMLP, notes that a National Institute of Literacy study entitled “The State of Literacy In America” has reported that 38 percent of Inkster adults are functionally illiterate, as compared to 17 perecnt in neighboring Dearborn Heights. JOMLP is a 501(c) (3) organization that strengthens literacy among children and adults by providing free books and workshops plus reading and writing tutors to Inkster residents.
