On Tuesday, voters across Wayne County made their decision on a candidate for the Michigan Primary Election amid COVID-19 pandemic.
A record number of people voted absentee, but the polls were still open for anyone voting in person. Safety precautions were available at polling locations including, sanitizer stations, face masks, and social distancing was required.
Here are the projected winners based on early voting results for the Wayne County Sheriff, Treasurer and Clerk:
Wayne County Sheriff DEM
Benny Napoleon projected winner for Wayne County Sheriff. He has been sheriff since 2009, and has served the county well. He is a national leader in training police to defuse potentially violent situations. Napoleon continues to participate in the national dialogue as an expert panelist on judicial and law enforcement reform. For more than a decade he has been engaged and involved with Fight Crime: Invest in Kids. He has also participated most recently in the NAACP Forum Race and Politics in America; Congressional Black Caucus’ Symposium In Pursuit of Policing and Criminal Justice Reform; and the League of Women Voters Policing in the 21st Century.
Napoleon was in the running against Democrats Charles Corley II of Westland and T.P. Nykoriak of Detroit. No Republicans were seeking the office.
Wayne County Treasurer DEM:
Eric R. Sabree projected winner as Wayne County Treasurer. He has been Treasurer since April 2016. He works on behalf of 43 municipalities and is responsible for the receipt, custody, investment, and disbursement of all County funds with a special emphasis on the collection of delinquent property taxes. During his three-year tenure as Treasurer, property tax foreclosures have been reduced by 85 percent. Angelo Brown, and Beverly Kindle-Walker were in the running for Democratic primary for Wayne County Treasurer.
Wayne County Clerk DEM:
Cathy M. Garrett relected as Wayne County Clerk. Both Democratic incumbent Cathy Garrett of Detroit and her Republican challenger Dylan Gomula of Plymouth were unopposed in the primary.
