Wayne County continues to help fight breast cancer

breastAs part of a personal and ongoing commitment to help the fight against breast cancer, Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans and a small group of volunteers have donated nearly $20,000 to the American Cancer Society.
This was the second year that Evans teamed up to show support for those who have or will come in contact with the disease.
Just days from the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Executive Evans is encouraging his team in the Department of Health, Veterans and Community Wellness to continue to perform important outreach through its Healthy Communities Hamtramck Clinic. Through the County’s Breast & Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) the Healthy Community Hamtramck clinic offers free health screenings to qualifying uninsured women between the ages of 40 and 64.
Each year eligible women may receive free breast care services that include a clinical breast exam, mammogram, follow up tests and treatment and cervical care services that include a pap smear, pelvic exam, follow up
tests and treatment.
“Cancer has directly impacted the lives of some of my friends and family members. As a result, making donations to fund cancer research has since become a very important cause to me and those closest to me,” said Evans. “By donating nearly $20,000 to the American Cancer Society in the last two years, we have aided in their effort to help people stay well, help get people well, find cures and fight for all women.”
According to the American Cancer Society¹s website, cancer.org, next to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting women.
Each year, in the United States alone, more than 200,000 women are diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and it is estimated that 40,000 of those women die each year of breast cancer.
