This summer, Wayne County Community College District offers a distinctly innovative and unique environment for children ages 4-17 and the programs offered are not limited to one teaching venue or method. Rather, there is a virtual banquet of educational and exciting choices. Wonderful learning environments – from the Downriver Campus, to the Western Campus; from Downtown to Northwest; and from Eastern to the Mary Ellen Stempfle’s University Center; offer unique opportunities and resources for challenging “hands-on” learning and fun exploration into the world of science, math, computers, language development, dramatic, safety and creative arts.
However, After School and Summer Camp programs are not an extension of the typical school day, but designed to complement it by providing many enrichment opportunities often unavailable to students. There will be homework time each day to assist in the completion of your child’s school assignments. These camps will allow your young person to spend fun-filled days participating in activities that stimulate their creativity and spur their imagination.
“Our goal is to develop and expand students’ interests, provide unique learning opportunities and a fun experience on a college campus,” said Shawna Forbes, Vice Chancellor for the School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. “We offer topics from college prep, sports, performing and traditional arts. We also offer computer literacy and leisure activities such as ballet and scrapbooking.”
Ms. Forbes said the summer is not only for kids, but that the District is offering a “parent Academy” as well. “The Parent Academy is designed to bring parents together in a collaborative effort to improve their children’s academic success through new knowledge and educational strategies. Parents will be provided with opportunities to partner with teachers, schools, and school districts to become active in their children’s educational journey.”
