Wayne County Chief Financial Officer Huey Newsome resigns.

Hughey Newsome, Chief Financial Officer for Wayne County, has announced his resignation from the county as he prepares for a new position at the Piston Group.

Newsome joined Wayne County in 2020 and has been a force in improving Wayne County’s financial outlook which includes increased ratings across the world’s top-three credit-rating agencies. With sound financial planning, fiscal management and operational restructuring, the County’s economic footing has grown under Newsome’s leadership.

“Hughey has been an invaluable asset to Wayne County and his work has helped us to grow immensely. As he embarks on this new journey, I extend my congratulations and express my gratitude for his commitment and contributions to Wayne County,” said Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans.

Newsome was recently named a 2022 Crain’s Detroit Business Notable Money Managers Award honoree. Now, he will join the Piston Group as their new Chief Financial Officer.

“While another opportunity has presented itself, I leave the County with a heavy heart. After nearly three years of hard work and progress against challenges the County had not seen before, I am eternally grateful for County Executive Evans allowing me to develop and grow under his watch and leadership,” said Hughey Newsome. “It is not everyone who gets to work under someone with the track record of public service as Mr. Evans. I owe a lot in my professional development directly to him.”

Hughey’s responsibilities will be shifted within the existing Management and Budget Department until a replacement is named. Additionally, former Wayne County CFO, Tony Saunders will support the county’s leadership during this transition.
