Lifetime released its first video promo of “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B,” recently. And Alexandra Shipp is channeling the Queen of Urban Pop in the short clip.
The 16-second clip features Shipp dressed in Aaliyah‘s signature style of a crop top with baggy pants and she’s dancing like the late pop star.
This is the first promo released for the film featuring Shipp as the late singer after taking over the part when Zendaya Coleman dropped out, and Wendy Williams took the seat of executive producing.
Jomo Hankerson, Aaliyah’s cousin and president of her label, Blackground Records, told the Daily News a few months ago, she deserved a more mainstream major studio release.
He said Aaliyah deserves, “a-list actors (and) A-list talent that can breathe life into what we think is a phenomenal story.”
But the film’s executive producer (Williams) stuck up for the making of the TV film in favor of some big Hollywood production.
“In my opinion, TV trumps motion picture,” she said. “Lifetime will play the movie over and over. TV is the way to get your story told.”
“Aaliyah: Princess of R&B” airs on Saturday, Nov. 15 on Lifetime.
