WAP and Women’s Sexuality: What’s The Big Deal?

WAP is a dynamic duo of sexual innuendos and jaw-dropping catchphrases, artists Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are a match made in rap heaven.

The music sensations dropped their first-ever collaboration “WAP” on last Friday. Buzz quickly surrounded the song with its shocking title. We suggest you search the full acronym at your own discretion.

A collaboration many had been waiting on, “WAP” hit the streets fast. Fans were eager to hear the finished product of two artists known for their provocative personas.

Lyrics so raunchy they rival the likes of Lil Kim and Trina, the pair’s wordplay on “WAP” has caused great controversy in various social settings. Conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro took to the internet Monday to recite the lyrics to “WAP” and express his disdain.

“Guys, this is what feminists fought for,” Shapiro said. “This is what the feminist movement is all about. It’s not women being treated as independent, full-rounded human beings. It’s about wet ass p-word! And if you say anything differently, it’s because you’re a misogynist. It gets really, really, really vulgar.”

Shapiro wasn’t the only conservative critic to find fault with the song. Many traditionalists commented on the expressive language and the damaging effect it has on women. Cardi B shared her disbelief at the outpouring of criticism. Fans seconded her comments.

Some attributed the high reports of sex-trafficking to songs like “WAP”.

The only problem? Women can embrace their sexuality without it infringing on their ability to respect and protect themselves. One could argue that men have done it forever.

The act of sex and it’s connection with the music industry is nothing new; male music artists have dedicated songs and albums to the intimate act. Male rappers are noted as being very vocal about it.

Unlike the critics, many praised the pair for their musical display of women empowerment. Actress and producer Viola Davis played along with Twitter users who said she should’ve had a cameo in the music video. Many fans specifically cited Davis as a potential replacement for influencer Kylie Jenner.
