WALK continues to connect local designers with an expansive fashion industry and cause
WALK Fashion Show, the Midwest region’s largest fashion show for independent designers is hosting their 12th annual Detroit show on Saturday, November 14, 2015 downtown at the Garden Theater in booming Midtown. This year, WALK is partnering with Catwalk Fashion, raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and using proceeds from the show to benefit the AIDS Walk Detroit effort. The show will produce three different fashion showcases to accommodate the ever-growing number of local designers in the area including the WALK Independent Designer Showcase, WALK Emerging Designer Showcase and WALK University’s Children’s Fashion Show.
WALK averages over 500 women to each casting call and draws more than 2,000 attendees from the metro Detroit area and across the country each year. Among this year’s sponsors are Opportunity Detroit, Ambassador Magazine, L’Espirit and The Michigan Chronicle.
The Detroit show will begin with WALK University’s Children’s Fashion Show at 1:00p.m., followed by the Emerging Designer Showcase at 4:00p.m. The Independent Designer Showcase kicks off at 8:30p.m., with doors opening one hour prior to each scheduled showtime for all three of this year’s segments. Tickets for the event are available on Eventbrite, with individual ticket prices ranging from $25 to $100, and group suite packages available for $1,000.
During this year’s Detroit show, WALK will be highlighting Detroit vs. Everybody, C. Grantston Bullard, Khon Ikhonic with House of Ikhonic and Complex Boutique. The list of local, independent designers featured for the show include: Ashley Harris, David Rose, Devorah Badee, Vino Supraja, Tyrone Hunter and Cedi Johnson.
“We are always grateful to be back home in Detroit,” says WALK’s co-founder Crystal Bailey. “Each year we continue seeing more and more undiscovered talent from the area, so we are happy that we can provide a platform for which they can showcase their stand-out pieces and fashion abilities. We’ve always prided our business on calling Detroit home, and it’s been really awesome watching the growing fashion scene here, and the city’s residents and artists take part in the evolution of fashion in Detroit.”
Bailey and Daishawn Franklin, other co-founder of WALK Fashion Show and business partner, recently returned home from New York Fashion Week, where the pair focused on bringing attention to WALK Fashion Show at one of fashion’s largest events all year. “One of the goals of WALK is to introduce emerging talent to the greater fashion industry,” says Franklin. “New York Fashion Week is one of the biggest fashion events of the year, so being able to showcase there is a really big deal, and the opportunity to bring that back home and share with the Detroit market is remarkable.”
WALK makes philanthropic and community outreach a top priority, and this year’s partnership with Catwalk Fashion reinforces WALK’s commitment to working towards raising awareness for a specific cause. WALK participates in charitable fashion shows, and typically donates a portion of proceeds to an organization, this year going back to HIV/AIDS.
