WADL TV 38-Detroit will be broadcasting the State of the City address on March 23 at 7 p.m.
“It is our mission and our privilege to be the frontrunner in providing the viewers in the metropolitan Detroit area with a comprehensive look into not only the community but those that represent it,” said Lewis Gibbs, president WADL TV 38.
“To be able to provide live coverage of not only relevant candidate debates, community programming and State of the City addresses are just some of the ways WADL will continue to fulfill its commitment to local television viewers.”
According to Karen Dumas, spokeswoman for Mayor Dave Bing, the mayor will give citizens an honest status of the state of Detroit. It will not be a political speech designed to pad the realities we deal with on a daily basis, but rather, “a candid outline of where we are, where we can go and how we can get there.”
Among issues the public can expect Mayor Bing to address is the M-1 Rail, the first segment of a light rail plan, which the mayor has shown confidence and talked about in interviews. He believes groundbreaking on the first segment of the light rail line along Woodward could take place by year’s end. He also expressed confidence that Detroit will receive millions of dollars in aid from the federal government. Bing could also discuss how to increase the likelihood of this happening.
In addition, there is the possibilit y of Bing talking about his conflicts with the unions, especially the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union. The mayor maintains that because the city can’t reach an agreement with that union, it will have to lay off even more employees.
