Vice President Kamala Harris is landing in Detroit today to talk about COVID-19 and voting rights, according to official White House correspondence.
Harris was supposed to come to town in late June, but due to recent flooding, she canceled her trip and rescheduled to today.
Harris has plans to arrive in the city later this afternoon, according to confirmed sources.
According to data from https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/, as of Friday, July 9, the state of Michigan has 896,067 total confirmed COVID-19 cases; 19,801 COVID-19 deaths; 672 daily confirmed cases, and 26 deaths between last Wednesday and Friday.
The vice president’s visit comes on the heels of a controversial White House initiative that goes door to door of individuals who are unvaccinated against COVID-19 and encourages them to be inoculated against the virus.
According to USA Today, Harris announced last week a $25 million Democratic Party investment that involves voting education and access.
“This campaign is grounded in the firm belief that everyone’s vote matters. That your vote matters,” Harris said in the article, referencing a more expansive platform of the “I Will Vote” campaign. She announced this during her speech at Howard University– her alma mater.
According to the article, Harris called the current national debate over voting rights “the fight of our lifetime,” linking it to past issues, adding there was a “continuum” between the efforts of people during the civil rights movement of yesterday and now.
