With minimal cap space to work with, the Detroit Pistons once again addressed a glaring need through free agency.
Free agent, Markieff Morris agreed to a two-year deal with the Pistons on Wednesday. The Pistons will use their bi-annual exception ($3.6 million) to sign the veteran forward.
Morris will resemble a familiar face to fans in the Motor City. His identical twin brother Marcus played two seasons (2015-2017) as a starter for Pistons.
For his career, Morris is averaging 11.6 points and 5.5 rebounds over 8 seasons. Last season, he averaged 9 points and 4.5 rebounds in 58 combined games with the Washington Wizards and Oklahoma City Thunder.
Morris comes to Detroit as a solid backup to Blake Griffin. He’s solid from midrange; shooting 45% in his career. He’ll help with providing the spacing the Pistons lacked over several seasons. Just like his brother Marcus, he’ll also bring an edgy attitude to the team. He’s a solid defender with a propensity to steal the ball. He’ll add to the Pistons perimeter defense.
As it currently stands, there are 14 players on the Pistons roster. With the final slot, they’ll look to add a backup Center at the veteran minimum.
All free agent agreements can be officially agreed upon on July 6.
