Pi Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Southfield Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will host a “United Nations Summit” to highlight the work of the United Nations and how our communities can make a meaningful contribution in a global economy.
The Summit will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lawrence Technological University, in the Architecture Building Auditorium, Room A200, located at located at 21000 W. Ten Mile Road, Southfield, Michigan.
On October 24th of each year, the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) chapters and their members celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter. This year will mark the 70th anniversary of the Charter. The Summit entitled, “The United Nations 70th Anniversary: A Stronger UN, A Better World” will consist of a summary of the work of the United Nations from the leadership of both organizations and a roundtable discussion with expert panelists on the criminal justice system, human trafficking and poverty. Then we will hear from a victim of human trafficking as well as information to increase awareness of human trafficking. Local area middle and high school students will listen to the message from the day and will draft and present resolutions through a simulation of the United Nations.
The public is invited to participate in this free summit.
Pre-registration is required for a light lunch.
“We are pleased to present this Summit so that key information is passed on to the community,” according to Terry Mann, president of the local Southfield Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
The roundtable discussion will be moderated by 46th District Court Judge, Shelia R. Johnson. Our featured panelists will include Southfield Chief of Police, Eric Hawkins; Robert L. Willis, Jr., local attorney and former Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Rights Division and founder and former President of the South Oakland NAACP; and Oakland County Commissioner, Janet Jackson among others.
Alison Jay, a victim of human trafficking will share her story and will be on hand to sign her book “Out of the Darkness: A Survivor’s Story.”
