Uninformed voters are best, according to Michigan legislature

Why be so sneaky about it? If they don’t want the electorate to be well-informed about the issues, why doesn’t the Michigan legislature just say they prefer stupid voters because intelligent voters are too much of a threat to how they want to do things?
Here’s the latest outrage from the Michigan Republican-controlled legislature, as reported in the Detroit Free Press:

“The final bill passed before the Legislature adjourned last week has municipal and school officials worried that educating the public about local ballot issues will become difficult, if not impossible.
“What started out as a fairly innocuous campaign finance bill that initially got unanimous support in the Senate, was totally changed at the last minute in the House late Wednesday to include several more controversial provisions, including one that bans using public dollars or resources to educate the public about ballot proposals in the 60 days leading up to an election.”

So the natural question might be, why is it that our elected representatives on the state level don’t want us to be informed about the issues that they are dutifully deciding on our behalf? Isn’t this the same group of concerned legislators who only last week voted to get rid of straight ticket voting out of concern that voters should take more time to think and ponder about the choices they make at the ballot box? Aren’t these the same folks who were worried that straight ticket voting was essentially the equivalent of mindless voting by an ill-informed populace? Because of course we all accept them at their word when they say this had nothing whatsoever to do with rigging the rules against Democrats and black voters, many more of whom are known to prefer straight ticket voting as compared to Republican voters.
If these legislators are truly the elected representatives of the people, then don’t the people have a right to know what in the heck they are talking about since what they are talking about tends to affect the lives of those who elected them?
As well as those who didn’t…
