Detroit, MI (March 2, 2023)—UNCF (United Negro College Fund) will host the Inaugural “A Mind Is…” ® Detroit Reception at 7:30 pm, Thursday, March 16, 2023 in person at the Detroit Tigers Club. Several corporate partners, educators, religious leaders and community influencers are expected to attend.
For 78 years, UNCF has strived to change the HBCU narrative across the nation by equipping more HBCU students with the resources necessary to transition into college, graduate and ultimately expand and diversify America’s highly educated workforce. The “A Mind Is…” ® Detroit Reception helps UNCF achieve the needed resources to do just that.
“As America deals with a very unprecedented time in our history, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) continue to show their value to the nation’s economic growth. HBCUs are major engines of Black social and economic mobility and the prosperity of state and local communities. Yet, they remain systemically underfunded, and their students must fight to gain access to the same benefits that others take for granted,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO, UNCF.
“Your support is needed more than ever, especially considering historic inflation—more talented, deserving students than ever have financial burdens which can prevent them from getting to and through college. I encourage you to invest in UNCF so together we can empower our next generation who will lead this nation and contribute to our economy.” “In academic year 2021-22 Michigan students received $1,365,546 from UNCF managed scholarships that assisted them in getting to and through school. This is possible because of donors who support events like the “A Mind Is…” ® Detroit Reception and their belief “a mind is a terrible thing to waste®, but a wonderful thing to invest in”™ that help us to succeed,” said Patrice M. Neal, Michigan area development director. Delta Air Lines is the presenting sponsor for the “A Mind Is…” ® Detroit Reception.

Proceeds from the reception will support UNCF-member HBCUs and college students from across Michigan and the United States. Entertainment for the night will be provided by “The Empress of Soul” – Terisa Griffin. The event host is Emmy nominated producer and award-winning TV host who currently anchors WDIV-Local 4’s award winning lifestyle show, “Live in the D” TATI AMARE!
