Hundreds of Volunteers to Help Assemble Food Boxes for Holiday Giveaway

On Dec. 12, the UAW-Ford team along with hundreds of area volunteers from area schools, business, labor, church and community groups assembled thousands of Boxes of Love, food boxes for what turned out to be one of the largest holiday food giveaways in the nation. The assembly of food boxes took  place at the UAW-Ford Brownstown Plant, 25555 Pennsylvania Rd. in Romulus.

Ford facilities across the country also held similar events, but Detroit area donations are expected to reach record levels for UAW Ford. The charitable action is part of UAW-Ford’s national community initiative which includes 18 states across the country. This year the combined donation increased to 25,000 boxes, which will be supplied with items to make complete holiday meals.

The retail value of each holiday food box is valued at $50:

·       A 12-14 lb. turkey

·       Boxes of stuffing, macaroni and cheese, cranberry sauce and corn bread mix

·       Jumbo-size can of vegetables, cake mix and frosting

“This is the third year UAW-Ford has undertaken such a monumental act of giving,” said Bill Dirksen, Ford Motor Company vice president of labor affairs. “An initiative of this scope requires a lot of organization and  hard work; and each year the UAW-Ford team gives generously of its time and resources.”

“Everyone deserves to have a joyous experience during the holiday season with their loved ones,” said UAW-Ford Vice President Jimmy Settles. “In order to create strong communities, it takes people willing to lend a helping hand, and we are proud to be here to help strengthen the communities in which our members live, work and play.”
