On March 24, U.S. Representative Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) issued a statement regarding the Take Responsibility for Workers and Families Act. The Take Responsibility for Workers and Families Act is the third stimulus package presented in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Backed by Democrats, this legislation will provide $2.5 trillion dollars to American citizens affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
“Once again, Democrats have put workers and families above corporate interests as we continue to take action to assist Americans impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. Our nation’s health professionals and first responders have selflessly put their safety on the line to care for individuals diagnosed with the virus, and this legislation reflects our commitment to allowing them to continue doing that work in the safest manner possible. For individuals and families across the country, this legislation provides $1,500 of immediate assistance for individuals and up to $7,500 for a family of five,” said Rep. Lawrence.
“As more states issue stay-at-home orders, as Michigan did today, this legislation further strengthens Unemployment Insurance and provides grants and loans to small businesses to use towards maintaining their payroll and offset revenue losses. Additionally, to address some of the concerns shared by many of my constituents, I worked with my colleagues to include provisions that ensure all Americans, especially those from low-income households, have access to clean water, while also fighting for the continued, safe operation of the United States Postal Service. I stand ready to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure all Americans have access to resources they need to protect their health and preserve their economic security.”
Here is the various program under the Take Responsibility For Workers And Families Act.
- More than $150 billion to support our nation’s hospitals and Community Health Centers, including funds to treat infected patients and purchase much needed Personal Protective Equipment.
- $1.5 billion in grants for low-income household drinking water and wastewater assistance.
- Includes language that prohibits the suspension of water and utility services for low-income households.
- Provides substantial funding to the United States Postal Service to continue its critical mission of delivering mail and medical supplies.
- Creates a temporary Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, which provides $600 per week for workers affected by the Coronavirus and is eligible for unemployment compensation benefits.
- Provides $3 billion for activities under the Defense Production Act to boost the production of essential medical Personal Protective Equipment.
- More than $500 billion in grants and interest-free loans to small businesses, including some that contain forgivable components.
- Provides local governments with $15 billion in Community Development Block Grant funds to address housing issues.
- Strengthens Child Tax Credits and the Earned Income Tax Credit.
- Boosts nutrition programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, to provide Americans with food security.
