On Monday, December 12, 2022, U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm will visit Michigan with Deputy Secretary for the U.S. Department of Labor Julie Su to jumpstart the Biden-Harris Administration’s latest effort to support the development of America’s modern battery industry.
In Metro Detroit, Secretary Granholm and Deputy Secretary Su will be joined by National Economic Council Deputy Director for Labor Celeste Drake, U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, and U.S. Representative Debbie Dingell along with electric vehicle battery manufacturers, automakers, labor, and industry stakeholders for a closed-door roundtable discussion on strategies to recruit and retain a diverse and skilled battery workforce.
The visit to the Great Lakes State will spotlight the Battery Workforce Initiative (BWI) and the Department of Energy’s commitment to support good clean energy manufacturing jobs and strengthen the nation’s global competitiveness.
The Battery Workforce Initiative is an industry-driven, government facilitated collaboration, led by the U.S. Department of Energy to speed up the development of high-quality training and meet the rapidly growing workforce needs of the advanced battery manufacturing industry. The initiative creates a historic gathering of employers, labor leaders, and federal officials to identify and establish training criteria needed to develop a robust supply chain and skilled workforce to produce state-of-the-art, reliable EV and grid storage batteries at scale.
Secretary Granholm, Deputy Secretary Su, Governor Whitmer, U.S. Senators Stabenow and Peters, and U.S. Representative Debbie Dingell plan to hold a press conference with battery and automotive industry stakeholders, and labor leaders.
