Twitter rejoices with Serena Williams as she makes history at Wimbledon

Saturday, July 9, Serena Williams walked away from the 2016 Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis club with the Venus Rosewater Dish for a seventh time.

Williams beat Germany’s Angeique Kerber 7-5,6-3 to tie Steffi Graf’s record of 22 singles Grand Slam titles in the open era. The all time record is held by Margaret Court, with 24.

With this win, the 34-year-old has achieved a total of 37 grand slams: 22 singles, 13 doubles and 2 mixed doubles.

The victory against Kerber comes after Williams’ surprise loss to her earlier in the year at the Australia Open.

Twitter was nearly immediately swarmed by tweets, gifs and memes congratulating Williams on her outstanding accomplishment. The tennis champ became the number one trend on the site as over 200 thousand tweets surfaced.

Fans made sure to silence any naysayers.

Beyoncé and Jay-z were in attendance to celebrate courtside with the tennis champ.

Celebrities like Kerri Washington and Lala Anthony expressed their support for Williams. Even presidential nominee Donald Trump joined in.

Williams still has 3 Grand Slam titles to go if she wants to hold the women’s all time record, but perhaps tonight she can play with her new shiny trophy.
