Turkey Giveaway Program Returns to Detroit Neighborhoods

On Tuesday, local McDonald’s Owner/Operators kicked off a campaign to once again bring turkeys to families in need for the holiday. The owner/operators are working with community organizations across the area to distribute vouchers which allow people in need to pick up a free turkey at McDonald’s participating McDonald’s restaurants across Detroit.

A total of 2,400 turkeys are being handed out at a dozen McDonald’s restaurants in the coming days.  Tuesday, the first distribution was held at the McDonald’s restaurant at 1000 Mack Avenue.  Local McDonald’s Owner/Operator Joni Thrower was joined by Detroit City Council President Pro Tempore Mary Sheffield, Forgotten Harvest CEO Kirk Mayes, Detroit Public Schools Community District Board President Angelique Peterson-Mayberry and representatives from the Detroit Branch NAACP.  This year’s event is the latest in a long tradition of Detroit-area McDonald’s franchisees helping the community at Thanksgiving.

In an effort to get closer to the need in every neighborhood, McDonald’s of Michigan worked with the NAACP, Forgotten Harvest Food Bank, and several local churches to set up a series of turkey voucher programs. Each voucher allows for the pickup of a free turkey at a McDonald’s restaurants located in Detroit, Oak Park, Harper Woods, Redford, Warren, Belleville or Ypsilanti.

The program is designed to complement efforts staged by Forgotten Harvest Food Bank to ensure more families have access to a turkey dinner this Thanksgiving.

“We are blessed to be in the neighborhoods and to be a part of the neighborhoods,” said Joni Thrower, Detroit McDonald’s Owner/Operator and a member of the McDonald’s of Michigan board. “I’m so proud of our local owner/operators who see this investment as an important part of a bigger program designed to show our thanks and to offer our support,” said Thrower.

Turkey pickup for people with vouchers will continue in at participating McDonald’s locations through November 23rd.
