President Donald Trump is facing backlash after he referred to Russian nuclear threats as “the N-word.”
On Tuesday (September 30), Trump delivered a speech to top U.S. military leaders at Marine Corps Base Quantico, where he sparked controversy when referring to nuclear threats made by Russian Security Council Deputy Chair Dmitry Medvedev earlier this year.
“We can’t let people throw around that word,” Trump said Tuesday. “I call it the N-word. There are two N-words, and you can’t use either of them.”
The president went on to tout the strength of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.
“Frankly, if it does get to use, we have more than anybody else. We have better. We have newer. But it’s something we don’t ever want to have to think about,” he said.

This isn’t the first time Trump has used the “N-word” to describe nuclear threats. In a June post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, “Medvedev is casually throwing around the ‘N-word’ (Nuclear!).”
The president’s latest remarks drew swift backlash as he equated a racial slur with nuclear threats.
“It’s disturbing and irresponsible for a sitting president to reduce nuclear diplomacy to a soundbite—let alone one that alludes to a violent slur,” a spokesperson from the NAACP said, calling the language “unacceptable at any level of leadership.”
