On Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. Jim Lentz, chief executive officer, Toyota Motor North America, will be in Detroit to observe, firsthand, students and their parents at Harms Elementary School, 2400 Central St., participating in a family literacy program funded by the automaker. Called Toyota Family Learning, one of its key components is that parents and their children attend the same school, spending time in the classroom together.
Lentz’ visit is in conjunction with the celebration of a 25-year partnership between Toyota and the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) across the U.S. In Detroit, nearly 4,000 parents and children have benefited from the program, dating back to 2005.
The NCFL-Toyota model — which has impacted over 2 million families across the U.S. —provides vulnerable immigrant and American families the skills needed to improve their lives. It is free to families and is funded with no public money; rather, it has been supported over the past 25 years by $46 million in grants from Toyota.
