‘Tis the Season for Shopping

Deck the halls and storm the malls, holiday shopping is upon us and this season may prove to be slightly different in comparison to previous years. Fresh off of a pandemic and one of the most devastating years in healthcare and economics, the holiday season is here to be celebrated, but shipping and product delays look to threaten holiday cheer and may put a damper on gift-giving. Small businesses across the city are hoping to help customers get a jump start on seasonal shopping without breaking the bank.

Lush Yummies Pie was established in 2015 and since then has made its signature Lemon Butta Pie a Detroit staple. Actress Lena Waithe helped put the family recipe in the hands of several celebrities and in turn led to being named to Oprah’s Favorite Things in 2020. Now, the Detroit brand is gearing up for the holiday season and pushing pies across the country.

This year, Lush Yummies Pie is prepping for holiday dessert orders. Taking a new approach on pick-up orders, customers will be welcomed with entertainment for one of the company’s first annual events.

“Our biggest priority is planning for our first annual Butta Pie Festival. It’s the first year we’ve ever decided to do something like this and really it is a cool way to do local pickup. When people order online during the holidays, they just stand outside and wait to pick up their pie. This year, we thought we’d make it a little bit more fun so we’ll have the Cass Tech Marching Band, we’ll have a DJ and we’ll also have a 2K run at the festival,” said Jennifer Lyle, founder and owner of Lush Yummies Pie. “We’re ramping up production for that day and really promoting the event.”

In addition, Lush Yummies Pie will be available worldwide as the company will be featured on the at-home television shopping channel QVC.

“We’re doing QVC for November and December so we’re excited about that,” said Lyle. “We did QVC once before and we sold out of pies in seven minutes and did about 2,000 units total.”

Owners Anthony and Melody Temple are preparing their Royal Oak storefront for the upcoming holiday season. AYV x FRESHER is a one-stop shop for gifting this holiday season catering to both genders. Specializing in women’s streetwear, the Fresher brand features bold jogging suits, dresses and accessories while AYV is the streetwear brand for men. While this is not the brand’s first turn around the Christmas tree, it is preparing to welcome shoppers during peak gifting season.

“We’re making shopping easier in-store by taking phone orders, offering prompt curbside pickup, and extending our hours for last minute shoppers. Same day shipping will be in effect and available for online orders to combat any delays. And every year, we still have complimentary gift wrap and bags so customers can take their purchases from the store straight to the tree,” said Melody Temple.

If that is not enough, the owners of AYV x FRESHER have holiday deals lined up so as to not break the bank this season.

“We have special offers lined up every week, including our 12 days of Christmas sale ending on Christmas Eve. Customers can stay tuned by signing up for text or email alerts via www.thefresherbrand.com and www.ayvlifestyle.com or follow us on social media @ayvxfresher,” said Melody Temple.

The pandemic has forced employee shortages across many industries resulting in longer wait times and shortages. To get a jump start on securing holiday desserts for work or family gatherings, this owner suggests the earlier, the better.

“Anybody who is ordering for out of state, we ask that those people have all of their orders in by November 15 and then we start shipping it on the 15th [of November],” said Lyle. “Once your pies go out, you get them and you freeze them until Thanksgiving. Our pies give you about 60 days in the freezer.”

The first annual Butta Pie Festival will take place on November 23.
